Whilst many pieces of furniture are primarily about function and need to be of at least a reasonably standard size and shape to serve their purpose adequately, coffee tables are one area where individual taste and style can be allowed to run wild.
A flat surface is about the only standard requirement of a coffee table, everything else is negotiable. This means that you can custom design a table using any materials that you please. The only consideration that you should take into account is the issue of safety; glass should be tempered glass and sharp corners should be smoothed slightly to prevent accidents. Other than these considerations you have free rein.
Coffee Tables Legs
One of the most common things to use in place of a coffee table is old packing cases from early last century. Often these were used to transport tea or other foodstuffs and many still have the original labelling upon them, faded by age. These can make a stylish and surprisingly convenient coffee table and can often be picked up fairly cheaply from antiques centres and fairs. Not only do they make good surfaces they also have a lot of storage space to hide away items that you do not want on display.
Large wicker picnic hampers can also work in this way too, although they do not provide a very uniform top surface. They do though look stylish, particularly when aged.
Another idea is to use tree stumps or other beautiful pieces of wood. The top surface can be sanded and polished to make a beautiful, natural surface. Alternatively, beautiful pieces of driftwood can have legs added to make a wonderful centrepiece coffee table for your room.
One of the most unique ideas that I have ever seen was a foosball table with shortened legs used in place of a table. Not only did it serve as great coffee table it made for many entertaining evenings. There are also pinball machines and various other alternatives to this theme on the market.
Old wooden wagon wheels are often given a central support and topped with glass to make a rustic table. This can look surprisingly modern, but also suit a country style home.
For the more rock and roll amongst you old guitars on legs can make a coffee table that will always be a talking point.
The important thing to remember when creating an unusual table is that your imagination is the only limit. A modern coffee table available through 150 stores nationwide, though it may be nice, isn't for everyone. Some people prefer something custom made and unique. Don't feel that whatever you choose is something that you must physically produce yourself however. There are many manufacturers and workshops that can custom design your item and make it exactly to your specification as long as you provide the idea.
