Girls! That guy you've been busy e-mailing on the dating site has finally committed to meet in person. Here's how to survive that first real person date!
1: Be punctual. Do you like to be kept waiting? Arriving late gives the impression that you are inconsiderate of other's time.

2: Try to meet for a coffee. Chatting over a coffee can go from 15 minutes to 2 hours. If the guy is a total loser it is totally acceptable to wrap it up fast. If you have plenty in common one coffee can easily become two.
3: Arrive sober. Stay sober. Alcohol may give him the idea that you are a lush or easy and will also lower your inhibitions, perhaps with you later thinking, " I didn't really mean to say or do that".
4: Smile! Be upbeat and try and stay positive without giving the impression you are on your tenth coffee.
5: Leave your cell phone off or at best on silent but do not answer it or acknowledge it.. You will never find a partner if you can't give the guy 15 minutes of your attention without the rest of your world stopping.
6: Go with your basic instincts. If he seems like a potential stalker or psychopath employ your plan b exit plan for emergencies a.s.a.p.
7: Go for smart casual or after work look. Wait for the nightclub date to show off the nightclub frock and makeup. A lot of guys are put off by excessive dramatic makeup, so go for natural and discreet. Tactfully show off your best attributes. Fantastic legs? Boot leg trousers or shortish skirt will show him this without you having to resort to a micro-mini skirt . Your cleavage your best asset? Wrap tops are great for these fortunate ladies because they show your curves without wearing a shirt that starts opening halfway to your belly ring. Remember, you want him to come back for more, not feel like he's seen the whole you on the first meeting.
8: Absolutely no sex! Even if he is your George Clooney and you've been in a sexual hiatus for seemingly years. Having sex on a first encounter has just made this first date a dreaded one night stand. You need to stimulate the guy's respect,interest and like. The lust mode is much more easy to engage than the aforementioned aspects. Remember the oft quoted male interpretation of "would you like to meet for a coffee?' really means "eventually I'd like to have sex with you". Make him wait.
9: For safety issues never,ever give out fine details that pin point exactly where you live. What happens if he turns out to be a stalker?
10: Avoid past relationship autopsies. No one likes damaged goods. Make sure you have the basic areas of your life covered with short and sweet explanations. Don't forget he wouldn't be free to have coffee with you if his own love life was in perfect order so he also has some sort of history.
11: Treat him with the same respect you like for yourself. Nowadays, everyone is so tied up in themselves and have become so me,me,me.
12: Stranger danger. You can't be too careful. Inform a friend where you are going and with whom (a little tricky with internet dating).Select a well lit, busy coffee shop that's easy to enter and leave. If the encounter is unsuccessful you don't want to be worrying about scurrying down some dark alley, being followed to the subway or harassed hailing a cab. You could also plan to meet a friend afterwards. Please do not have your friend sit there and watch on you from another table as this is too disconcerting and sometimes obvious, not too mention a bit school girlish. If you become fearful try a ruse like going up to the wait staff to order another coffee, mention to them you don't feel safe and can they keep an eye out on you. Go to the powder room and call your emergency exit. Get out as quickly and politely as you can. Make sure he is not following you.
13: Try to hear as well as talk. Both of you should leave feeling like you got a bit of a better understanding of the other. How often do you and your girlfriends say about a potential date "he is just so into himself, his career that he wasn't even interested in anything about me"? Even though it sounds terribly obvious a safe balance is about 50/50 although it can be tricky with first date nervousness etc to get it right between clamming up entirely and verbal diarrhea.
14: Be friendly, listen and smile. First impressions do count. When trying to find a long term partner don't sell yourself short by coming over as tacky or cheap. You want to be treated with respect with an eye on the future not viewed as a quick sexual conquest.
15: Practice makes perfect. Some say "you are here for as good time not a long time". Don't tie yourself up in knots about these first dates, if this one wasn't a success then it really was just perfecting your dating skills whilst waiting for your Mister Right to come along. Hopefully next time!
